How Do I Package Reed Diffusers for Safe Shipping?

Glass bottles plus ocean freight equals breakage risk. With proper packaging, you can keep damage rates under 1%. With poor packaging, you can lose 5% to 10% of an order. Here is the packaging specification we use and recommend.

The Three-Layer Protection System

Layer 1: Bottle-level protection

Each diffuser bottle gets individual protection. Options ranked by cost and protection level:

• Tissue paper wrap: $0.02 per unit. Minimal protection. Acceptable only for stock items in partitioned boxes.
• PE foam sleeve: $0.05 to $0.10 per unit. Good scratch and minor impact protection.
• Molded pulp tray: $0.10 to $0.20 per unit. Excellent for rigid gift boxes.
• EVA foam insert: $0.20 to $0.40 per unit. Premium protection, used in luxury packaging.
• Bubble wrap plus corner protectors: $0.08 to $0.15 per unit. Common for e-commerce shipping.

For most private label orders, a PE foam sleeve plus a printed card box provides adequate protection at reasonable cost.

Layer 2: Inner box with partitions

Inner boxes hold 4, 6, 8, or 12 units with cardboard dividers between each bottle. Dividers prevent glass-to-glass contact, which is the leading cause of breakage. Specifications:

• Cardboard weight: 350 gsm to 400 gsm white card or E-flute corrugated
• Divider thickness: minimum 1.5 mm
• Cell clearance: bottle diameter plus 3 mm to 5 mm on each side
• Closure: tuck-end or auto-lock bottom

A 6-cell inner box costs $0.30 to $0.55. A 12-cell box costs $0.50 to $0.85.

Layer 3: Master export carton

Master cartons hold 24 to 48 units, depending on bottle size. Specifications:

• Material: 5-ply corrugated cardboard, BC flute, 200 lb test minimum
• Inner lining: one layer of corrugated padding on bottom and top
• Void fill: air pillows, kraft paper, or foam sheets between inner boxes
• Sealing: H-tape pattern with 50 mm wide BOPP tape
• Weight limit: keep under 22 kg per carton for safe manual handling
• Markings: ship mark, side mark, “FRAGILE,” “THIS SIDE UP,” “KEEP DRY,” and stack limit icons

A 24-unit master carton for 150 ml diffusers measures approximately 50 x 35 x 30 cm and weighs 11 to 12 kg loaded.

Special Considerations for Reed Diffusers

Cap sealing. The single biggest failure mode is not glass breakage but leakage. Caps must have an EVA or PE foam liner that compresses to form a seal. Torque specs should be 1.2 to 1.8 N-m for standard 18/415 necks. Add a tamper-evident shrink band over the cap for extra security.

Reed packaging. Reeds ship separately from bottles in their own sleeve or tube. Bundled reeds inside the bottle during shipping cause wicking and leakage. Pack reeds in a sealed PE bag, then a printed sleeve, then include one set per bottle carton cell.

Liquid fill level. Fill to 90% to 92% of bottle capacity. Overfilling causes leakage when liquid expands at high temperatures (containers can reach 60 degrees Celsius in summer shipping). Underfilling looks cheap and reduces burn time.

Orientation. Always ship bottles upright. “THIS SIDE UP” arrows on cartons are essential. Diffusers shipped on their side leak through the cap seal in 1% to 3% of units.

Drop Test and Vibration Test Standards

Before approving bulk packaging, require these tests:

• ISTA 1A drop test: 10 drops from 76 cm (for cartons under 21 kg) on corners, edges, and faces. Zero breakage and zero leakage acceptable.
• ISTA 2A vibration test: 60 minutes of random vibration simulating truck and ocean transport. No component shifting or damage.
• Stack test: Cartons stacked 5 high for 72 hours without deformation.

Common Mistakes That Cause Damage

1. Single-wall cartons. 3-ply cartons flex under stacking and crush inner boxes. Always use 5-ply for export.
2. No dividers. Bottles touching each other chip and crack. Dividers are non-negotiable.
3. Loose void space. Empty space inside cartons lets inner boxes shift. Fill all voids with kraft paper or air pillows.
4. Cheap tape. Low-adhesion tape fails in humid container conditions. Use 50 mm BOPP tape with hot-melt adhesive.
5. No palletization. For orders over 100 cartons, ship on fumigated wooden pallets with stretch wrap and steel strapping. Loose cartons get handled roughly and lost.
