Container Candle Production: From Pour to Pack

Understanding the factory production process helps B2B buyers set realistic timelines, identify quality checkpoints, and communicate effectively with OEM partners. This guide walks through each stage of container candle manufacturing as it occurs in a professional production facility.

Stage 1: Raw Material Preparation

Production begins with material staging. The factory pulls wax (soy, paraffin, coconut blend, or custom formulation) from inventory and verifies lot numbers against the production order. Fragrance oils are measured per the approved formula, typically at 6-10 percent of total wax weight.

Containers (glass jars, tins, or ceramic vessels) are inspected for chips, cracks, and dimensional consistency. A standard QC checkpoint rejects containers with rim defects exceeding 1mm or base thickness variation greater than 0.5mm.

Wicks are cut to length (container height plus 15-20mm for trimming allowance) and attached to metal sustainer tabs using a wick tabbing machine. Production lines tab 2,000-5,000 wicks per hour.

Time allocation: 1-2 hours for material staging on a standard production run.

Stage 2: Wax Melting

Wax is loaded into jacketed melting tanks (capacity typically 200-1,000 liters per tank). Heating is indirect via water or oil jacket to prevent scorching. Target melt temperature depends on wax type:

  • Paraffin: 75-85 degrees Celsius
  • Soy wax: 65-75 degrees Celsius
  • Coconut-soy blends: 60-70 degrees Celsius

Melting takes 1-3 hours depending on tank size and starting form (slab, pellet, or flake). The wax is stirred gently to ensure uniform temperature without incorporating air bubbles. Overheating above 90 degrees Celsius degrades soy wax and causes yellowing; factories use thermostatic controls to prevent this.

Stage 3: Fragrance Addition

Once wax reaches the correct temperature, fragrance oil is added. This is the most critical step for scent performance.

Key parameters:

  • Addition temperature: 60-65 degrees Celsius for soy (too hot causes flash-off of top notes; too cold prevents proper binding)
  • Addition temperature: 70-75 degrees Celsius for paraffin
  • Stirring: 2-3 minutes at low speed (60-100 RPM) to ensure homogeneous distribution without aeration
  • Fragrance load: Verified by weight against the approved formula (tolerance typically plus/minus 0.2 percent)

Colorants (liquid dye or dye chips) are added at this stage if specified. Dye concentration is usually 0.01-0.05 percent by weight. The batch is stirred an additional 1 minute after dye addition.

Stage 4: Container Pre-Heating and Pouring

Containers are pre-heated to 40-50 degrees Celsius in a warming oven or heat tunnel. Pre-heating reduces thermal shock, improves wax adhesion to glass, and minimizes wet spots and sinkholes.

Pouring is done either manually (for small batches under 500 units) or via automated filling machines (for runs of 1,000+ units). Automated fillers dispense by volume or weight with accuracy of plus/minus 2 grams per unit.

Pour temperature:

  • Soy: 55-60 degrees Celsius
  • Paraffin: 65-72 degrees Celsius

The tabbed wick is centered in the container before pouring (using wick centering bars or adhesive dots on the base). After filling, a secondary wick-centering device holds the wick vertical during initial cooling.

Stage 5: Cooling and Curing

Candles cool at room temperature (18-22 degrees Celsius) in a draft-free environment. Rapid cooling causes cracking, frosting, and poor glass adhesion. The cooling area maintains stable humidity (40-60 percent RH).

Cooling timeline:

  • Initial set (surface solidifies): 2-4 hours
  • Full solidification: 12-24 hours
  • Wick trimming: After full solidification, wicks are trimmed to 6-8mm above wax surface

Curing (soy wax specifically): Soy candles require 7-14 days of curing before optimal hot throw develops. During curing, fragrance molecules fully integrate with the wax crystal structure. Paraffin candles need only 24-48 hours before performance testing.

Factories managing large production runs use curing racks in temperature-controlled rooms (20-25 degrees Celsius) with FIFO rotation.

Stage 6: Quality Control

Before packing, each batch undergoes QC inspection:

Visual inspection (100 percent of units):

  • Surface smoothness (no sinkholes, cracks, or frosting beyond acceptable limits)
  • Glass adhesion (no wet spots exceeding 10 percent of container surface)
  • Wick centered within 2mm of container center
  • Correct fill level (plus/minus 3mm from specified height)
  • No debris, bubbles, or discoloration

Burn testing (sampling per batch):

  • 3-5 units per 1,000 produced are destructively burn-tested
  • Full burn cycle completed: flame height, melt pool diameter, burn time, soot, and container temperature recorded
  • Results compared against the approved golden sample

Weight verification:

  • Random sampling (AQL 2.5 standard) to confirm net content matches label declaration
  • Tolerance: plus/minus 5 percent of stated weight

Stage 7: Packing

Approved candles move to the packing line:

  1. Lid application: Metal, wood, or glass lids fitted. Dust covers applied if specified.
  2. Label application: Product labels, safety labels, and barcode labels applied per artwork approval.
  3. Inner packaging: Individual boxes, tissue wrap, or foam inserts depending on retail format.
  4. Carton packing: Units packed in corrugated export cartons (typically 12 or 24 units per carton) with dividers or foam separators.
  5. Carton marking: Shipping marks, product description, quantity, gross/net weight, carton dimensions, and country of origin printed on carton exterior.
  6. Palletization: Cartons stacked on fumigated wooden or plastic pallets, stretch-wrapped, and labeled for container loading.
