Reed Diffuser Size Guide: Matching Volume to Space

One of the most common specification mistakes in a diffuser line is mismatching volume to space. A 200ml diffuser in a small bathroom is overpowering and depletes wastefully; a 50ml unit in an open-plan living area is invisible. Getting the size range right matters for customer satisfaction, for the longevity claims on your packaging, and for the coherence of your SKU lineup. This guide gives you working coverage figures and reed counts for the four standard volumes.

Coverage by volume

Coverage figures assume a standard DPG/IPM base, fiber reeds, normal ceiling height (around 2.4–2.7m), and average airflow. Treat them as planning ranges, not guarantees — temperature, ventilation, and fragrance strength all shift the real number.

50ml — covers roughly 5–10 square meters. The personal-space format. Ideal for bathrooms, small home offices, bedside tables, and entry nooks. Longevity is typically 4–6 weeks. This size works well as an entry price point, a gift add-on, or a hospitality bathroom amenity.

100ml — covers roughly 10–15 square meters. The versatile standard for bedrooms, smaller living rooms, and studies. Longevity runs 6–9 weeks. This is often the core SKU of a line: large enough to feel substantial, small enough to keep the price accessible.

150ml — covers roughly 15–25 square meters. The mainstream premium format and the most common volume for a flagship diffuser. Longevity is typically 8–12 weeks. It suits open living areas, kitchens, and larger bedrooms, and it carries enough presence to anchor a retail display.

200ml — covers roughly 25–40 square meters. The large-format statement piece for open-plan spaces, lofts, and commercial reception areas. Longevity stretches to 12–16 weeks. This size justifies a heavier, more decorative vessel and a higher price tier.

Reed count per size

Reed count is the throttle on throw and depletion. Too few reeds and the diffuser under-performs; too many and it drains fast. Recommended counts for 3mm fiber reeds:

  • 50ml: 4–6 reeds
  • 100ml: 6–8 reeds
  • 150ml: 8–10 reeds
  • 200ml: 10–12 reeds

Reed length should scale with the vessel — a good rule is reeds cut to roughly 1.5 times the bottle height, so the wicking surface and the visual proportion both read correctly. Diameter matters too: stepping from 3mm to 4mm reeds increases wicking rate and throw, which can let you use fewer reeds for the same effect.

For rattan reeds, which wick more slowly, add one or two reeds to these counts to reach comparable throw.

Building a coherent size range

A well-structured line usually offers three sizes rather than four, to avoid cannibalization and keep inventory manageable. A common architecture:

  • Entry / gift: 50ml or 100ml — low price, high volume, drives trial and gifting.
  • Core: 150ml — the flagship, the marketing hero, the bulk of revenue.
  • Statement / commercial: 200ml or larger — premium positioning and hospitality or open-plan buyers.

Each step should differ enough in price and presence to feel like a distinct choice, typically a 40–60% price increment between tiers. Keep the same fragrance across all sizes so customers can match rooms, and clearly state the coverage area on each box — it reduces returns and builds trust.

Specifying with your factory

When you brief sizes, give your factory the volume, the target coverage, and the desired longevity, and let them recommend the reed count and base ratio that hit those targets. Request a depletion test for each size — weight loss measured over time at controlled temperature — so the longevity claim on your packaging is backed by data rather than marketing. Confirm that the vessel, cap, and reed length are proportioned for each volume; a 50ml bottle with full-height reeds looks unbalanced, and a 200ml vessel with short reeds underperforms.

Standardizing components across sizes — same cap, same label system, same glass family in graduated volumes — lowers tooling and MOQ complexity while giving the line a unified shelf presence.
