Perfume Concentration Levels: EDT, EDP, and Extrait in Production

Concentration level is one of the first decisions a buyer makes when developing a fine fragrance line. It determines cost, longevity, packaging requirements, regulatory classification, and retail positioning. Yet it is also one of the most loosely defined terms in the industry, with no universal legal standard. This article clarifies the working ranges used by manufacturers and explains what each level means for production planning.

The Standard Concentration Ranges

In commercial production, the following ranges are widely used:

  • Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2-5% fragrance concentrate in alcohol.
  • Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5-15% concentrate, with 8-12% the most common.
  • Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15-20% concentrate, with 15-18% typical.
  • Extrait de Parfum (Parfum): 20-40% concentrate, with 20-30% most common.

These are working conventions, not regulations. A brand can legally label a 12% formula as “EDP” in most markets, which is why buyers should always specify the exact percentage in their purchase order rather than relying on the marketing term.

Cost Implications

Fragrance concentrate is typically the single largest variable cost in a finished perfume. A simple way to model the impact:

If the concentrate costs USD 60 per kg and alcohol plus water costs USD 1.50 per liter:

  • A 10% EDT uses 100 g of concentrate per liter, roughly USD 6.00 of fragrance per liter.
  • A 18% EDP uses 180 g, roughly USD 10.80 per liter.
  • A 25% Extrait uses 250 g, roughly USD 15.00 per liter.

At a 50 ml retail bottle, that translates to roughly USD 0.30, USD 0.54, and USD 0.75 of fragrance cost respectively. The differential looks small per unit, but at 100,000 units it becomes USD 30,000-75,000, which is significant for margin planning.

Extrait formulas also tend to use richer base notes (resins, woods, musks) that are more expensive per kg than the citrus and aromatic materials common in EDTs, so the real cost gap is often wider than the percentage gap suggests.

Longevity and Performance

Concentration correlates with wear time, but the relationship is not linear. Approximate skin longevity:

  • EDT: 3-5 hours
  • EDP: 6-8 hours
  • Extrait: 8-12+ hours

Sillage (projection) peaks at EDP level. Extrait formulas, because they contain more heavy base molecules and less alcohol, actually project less in the first hour but last longer on skin. This is an important point for buyers: a higher concentration does not automatically mean a stronger first impression.

Market Positioning

Each concentration occupies a distinct retail tier:

  • EDT dominates mass-market and entry-level prestige, typically priced USD 30-80 for 100 ml.
  • EDP is the current prestige standard, typically USD 80-180 for 50-100 ml, and accounts for the majority of new launches in the prestige segment.
  • Extrait anchors luxury and niche positioning, typically USD 150-400+ for 50-75 ml, often in heavier glass and smaller formats.

In recent years, EDP has overtaken EDT in prestige launches, while extrait has grown fastest in percentage terms, driven by niche and Middle Eastern-influenced brands.

Production Considerations

Higher concentrations create specific production requirements:

  1. Maceration time. EDP and Extrait benefit from 2-6 weeks of maceration after dilution to allow the alcohol and concentrate to integrate. EDT can be released after 1-2 weeks.
  2. Solubility. Above 25% concentrate, some materials (especially natural resins and waxes) may precipitate. Chill filtering at 0-5C is standard for Extrait.
  3. Alcohol grade. Extrait formulas typically use 96% denatured ethanol with low water content; EDT can tolerate higher water percentages, which reduces flammable-goods shipping costs.
  4. Hazard classification. All alcohol-based perfumes ship as UN1266 Class 3 dangerous goods, but Extrait’s higher concentrate load can affect flash point declarations and packaging group.

Specifying Concentration in Your Brief

A precise brief should state:

  • Target concentrate percentage (for example, “18% +/- 0.5%”)
  • Alcohol grade and denaturant (for example, “96% ethanol, denatured with DEP”)
  • Maceration and chill-filtration requirements
  • Target longevity in hours, verified by panel testing
