What Fragrance Concentration Should I Choose for My Product?
Fragrance load percentage directly affects scent throw, product longevity, cost, and safety compliance. Choose wrong and you either waste money on excess oil or ship a product that customers call “weak.” Here are the specific numbers for each product category.
Standard Concentration Ranges by Product Type
| Product | Typical Fragrance Load | Sweet Spot |
|---|---|---|
| Reed diffuser (100-200 ml) | 20-30% | 25% |
| Scented candle (soy or paraffin) | 6-10% | 8% |
| Room spray (100-250 ml) | 10-20% | 15% |
| Car diffuser (5-10 ml) | 30-50% | 40% |
| Wax melts | 8-12% | 10% |
| Electric diffuser oil | 15-25% | 20% |
These percentages refer to fragrance oil as a proportion of the total liquid or wax weight. The remainder is carrier: DPG or isopropyl myristate for diffusers, wax for candles, and water plus solubilizer for sprays.
Why Reed Diffusers Sit at 20-30%
Reed diffusers rely on passive evaporation through reed sticks. The fragrance must be concentrated enough to project scent into a 15 to 25 square meter room, yet diluted enough to wick properly through the reeds. Below 20%, the scent is barely noticeable beyond 1 meter. Above 30%, the oil becomes too viscous for consistent capillary action, and reeds clog faster.
At Aromiso, our standard reed diffuser formula uses 25% fragrance oil in a DPG base. This delivers 8 to 12 weeks of consistent throw from a 150 ml bottle. Clients targeting the luxury segment sometimes request 30%, which intensifies the first 2 weeks of throw but shortens overall life to 6 to 8 weeks.
How Concentration Affects Your Unit Cost
Fragrance oil is the most expensive raw material in any scented product. At current pricing:
- Standard fragrance oils cost $12 to $25 per kg
- Premium or niche-accord oils cost $30 to $60 per kg
- Natural essential oil blends cost $40 to $120+ per kg
For a 150 ml reed diffuser at 25% concentration, you use roughly 37 ml (about 35 g) of fragrance oil. At $20/kg oil, that is $0.70 in fragrance cost per unit. Bump to 30% and the cost rises to $0.84. Across 5,000 units, that is a $700 difference.
For candles, an 8% load in a 200 g candle means 16 g of oil, roughly $0.32 per unit at $20/kg. Going to 10% adds $0.08 per unit.
Matching Concentration to Market Positioning
Value segment (retail $8-$15): Use 20% in diffusers, 6% in candles. Keep fragrance cost under $0.50 per unit. Choose simpler accord oils at $12-$18/kg.
Mid-market (retail $15-$35): Use 25% in diffusers, 8% in candles. Fragrance cost of $0.60-$1.00 per unit. This is where most private label brands compete.
Premium and luxury (retail $35-$80+): Use 28-30% in diffusers, 9-10% in candles. Fragrance cost of $1.20-$3.00+ per unit. Complex multi-note accords or high natural content.
Safety and Compliance Limits
You cannot simply maximize fragrance load. Two constraints apply:
IFRA standards. The International Fragrance Association sets maximum usage levels for individual raw materials. Your factory should provide IFRA certificates for every blend. Category 10A (air care) governs reed diffusers; Category 12 covers candles.
Flash point. Reed diffuser liquids with high oil concentration may have a flash point below 60 degrees Celsius, triggering hazardous goods classification for shipping. At 25% in DPG, most blends stay above 65 degrees Celsius and ship as non-dangerous goods. Above 30%, always confirm flash point before booking freight.
CLP and GHS labeling. In the EU, products above certain concentration thresholds require hazard pictograms on packaging. Your factory should supply CLP-compliant label text based on the exact formula.
Practical Advice for Your First Order
- Start at the category sweet spot (25% for diffusers, 8% for candles).
- Request samples at two concentrations, for example 20% and 25%, and blind-test them in a real room for 7 days.
- Do not judge scent strength from the bottle. Evaluate throw at 1 meter and 3 meters over 48 hours.
- Ask your factory for a stability report confirming the blend performs consistently for at least 12 months at the chosen concentration.
- Lock your formula before scaling. Changing concentration after launch alters the product character and may require new safety documentation.
