Burn testing is the definitive quality check for candle production. No amount of visual inspection can predict how a candle will perform once lit. For B2B buyers, understanding the burn testing protocol helps you evaluate factory quality systems, interpret test reports, and set appropriate acceptance criteria for your products.

Why Burn Testing Matters

A candle can look perfect on the shelf and fail catastrophically in use. Common failures that only manifest during burning include:

  • Flame height exceeding safety limits (above 25mm US / 30mm EU)
  • Container cracking or shattering from thermal stress
  • Excessive soot production blackening the container and surrounding area
  • Tunneling that leaves 30-40 percent of wax unburned
  • Secondary ignition of the container or label
  • Flame extinguishing prematurely due to wick drowning

These failures create safety liabilities, customer complaints, and potential recalls. Burn testing catches them before products ship.

Testing Environment Requirements

Valid burn tests require controlled conditions:

  • Ambient temperature: 20-25 degrees Celsius (68-77 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Relative humidity: 40-60 percent
  • Air movement: Less than 0.2 m/s (no drafts from HVAC, open windows, or foot traffic)
  • Surface: Level, heat-resistant, non-combustible (ceramic tile or metal)
  • Spacing: Minimum 10cm between test candles; minimum 30cm from walls or objects
  • Monitoring: Continuous observation or time-lapse recording; never leave unattended

Factories conducting tests to ASTM or EN standards must document environmental conditions for each test session.

The Full Burn Test Procedure

Phase 1: Pre-Burn Preparation

  1. Select test units randomly from the production batch (minimum 3 units per SKU; 5 units for new product validation).
  2. Record: batch number, production date, wax lot, fragrance lot, wick type and size, container lot.
  3. Measure and record: total weight, wax fill height, wick length above wax surface.
  4. Inspect visually: surface quality, wick centering, glass integrity, label placement.
  5. Condition candles at test environment temperature for minimum 4 hours before lighting.
  6. Trim wick to 6mm if not already at specification.

Phase 2: First Burn Session

  1. Light the candle and start a timer.
  2. Record flame height at 5-minute intervals for the first 30 minutes, then every 15 minutes.
  3. Measure melt pool diameter at 1-hour intervals (using calipers or a marked ruler against the glass exterior).
  4. Record time to full melt pool (wax melted to container walls).
  5. Observe and note: soot production, flame flickering, smoking, odor anomalies.
  6. Extinguish after 4 hours (maximum recommended continuous burn).
  7. Record: melt pool depth, wax consumption (by weight), wick condition (mushrooming, curling).

Phase 3: Subsequent Burn Sessions

  1. Allow candle to solidify completely (minimum 2 hours).
  2. Trim wick to 6mm if mushrooming occurred.
  3. Repeat burn sessions of 3-4 hours each.
  4. Record the same metrics at each session.
  5. Continue until the candle reaches end-of-life criteria:
    • Container candles: 10mm of wax remaining at the base.
    • Pillar candles: 20mm of wax remaining.

Phase 4: End-of-Life Assessment

  1. Record total burn time (sum of all sessions).
  2. Weigh the remaining wax and container; calculate wax consumption rate (grams per hour).
  3. Inspect container for: thermal damage, cracking, discoloration, label charring.
  4. Inspect the base for: heat damage, wax leakage.
  5. Photograph the final state for documentation.

Pass/Fail Criteria

Safety Criteria (Automatic Fail)

Any of the following results in immediate test failure:

  • Flame height exceeds 25mm (ASTM) or 30mm (EN 15493) at any point during steady-state burn.
  • Container cracks, shatters, or leaks molten wax.
  • Secondary ignition occurs (label, packaging, or decorative elements catch fire).
  • Container exterior temperature exceeds 80 degrees Celsius (risk of burns to consumers).
  • Candle tips over during normal burn without external force.
  • Flame does not self-extinguish when wax reaches 10mm depth (container) or 20mm (pillar).

Sampling Frequency in Production

For ongoing production quality control:

  • New SKU validation: 5 units burned to completion before production approval.
  • Each production batch (1,000-5,000 units): 3 units per SKU burned through minimum 3 sessions (not necessarily full burn unless flagged).
  • Large batches (5,000+ units): 5 units per SKU, with at least 2 burned to completion.
  • Any material change (new wax lot, new fragrance lot, new wick supplier): Full 5-unit burn test repeated.

Documentation and Reporting

A proper burn test report includes:

  1. Product identification (SKU, batch, date, specifications)
  2. Environmental conditions during testing
  3. Individual unit data tables (all metrics per session)
  4. Summary statistics (mean, range, standard deviation for key metrics)
  5. Pass/fail determination against stated criteria
  6. Photographs: first burn, mid-burn, end-of-life
  7. Tester name and signature
  8. Date of report

Buyers should request this report for every production batch. It is your primary evidence of quality compliance and your defense in the event of a consumer complaint or regulatory inquiry.
