Choosing between paraffin and beeswax is one of the first material decisions any candle brand must make. The choice affects unit economics, production workflow, regulatory compliance, and how consumers perceive your product on the shelf. This comparison breaks down the numbers so B2B buyers can make an informed sourcing decision.

Raw Material Cost

Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product with a global commodity price that typically ranges from $1.20 to $2.50 per kilogram depending on grade and order volume. Fully refined paraffin with a melting point of 58-62 degrees Celsius is the standard for container candles and pillar candles.

Beeswax, by contrast, trades at $12 to $25 per kilogram for cosmetic-grade material. Prices fluctuate with honey harvest seasons and regional supply. A single kilogram of beeswax costs roughly 8 to 12 times more than an equivalent kilogram of paraffin.

For a standard 200-gram container candle, the wax cost breaks down as follows:

  • Paraffin: approximately $0.24 to $0.50 per unit
  • Beeswax: approximately $2.40 to $5.00 per unit

At a production run of 10,000 units, the wax cost differential alone is $21,600 to $45,000.

Burn Performance

Paraffin candles burn at a higher temperature, typically producing a melt pool within 30 to 45 minutes in a standard 7-centimeter diameter container. The burn rate for paraffin averages 7 to 10 grams per hour.

Beeswax has a higher melting point of 62 to 65 degrees Celsius and burns slower, averaging 4 to 6 grams per hour. A 200-gram beeswax candle can deliver 33 to 50 hours of burn time versus 20 to 28 hours for a paraffin candle of the same weight.

However, beeswax is harder to work with in production. It shrinks significantly during cooling, often requiring a second pour to fill sinkholes. This adds 15 to 25 percent more labor time per unit compared to paraffin, which sets cleanly in a single pour for most container applications.

Scent Throw

Paraffin excels in fragrance load capacity. It can hold 8 to 12 percent fragrance oil by weight while maintaining a stable burn. The hot scent throw is strong and immediate, making it the preferred base for heavily scented products.

Beeswax holds fragrance less efficiently. Most formulators cap fragrance load at 4 to 6 percent to avoid burn issues. Beeswax also carries its own natural honey-like aroma, which can interfere with delicate fragrance profiles. For brands selling unscented or lightly scented products, this natural scent is a marketing asset. For heavily fragranced lines, it is a constraint.

Regulatory and Marketing Considerations

Paraffin faces increasing scrutiny in markets like the European Union and parts of North America. While scientific studies have not conclusively linked paraffin candle emissions to health risks at normal use levels, consumer perception has shifted. Retailers such as Whole Foods and several EU eco-label programs restrict or discourage paraffin products.

Beeswax carries a natural, sustainable narrative that commands premium pricing. Retail price points for beeswax candles typically run 3 to 5 times higher than paraffin equivalents. A paraffin container candle that retails at $8 to $12 can be repositioned at $28 to $45 in beeswax with appropriate branding.

Production Considerations for OEM Buyers

From a factory standpoint, paraffin is easier to scale. It melts at lower temperatures, flows easily into molds, and is compatible with automated pouring lines. Cycle times are shorter, and defect rates are lower.

Choose beeswax if your brand targets the premium natural segment, you can support a retail price above $25 per unit, and your marketing emphasizes sustainability and clean-burning claims.
