IFRA Standards Explained for Candle and Diffuser Buyers

The IFRA Standards address the safe use of fragrance ingredients. They include prohibitions, restrictions, and specifications for particular materials. A fragrance that is suitable for one finished-product use should not automatically be approved for another. For a buyer, the key is to check the specific fragrance mixture and its intended use before placing an order.

Tell the supplier how the fragrance will be used

Describe the finished product: for example, a scented candle, reed diffuser, room spray, or skin-contact product. Give the proposed fragrance concentration and destination market. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable IFRA use category for that product and the maximum permitted use level for the proposed mixture. Compare that level with your formula before approving it.

The applicable category depends on how consumers use and encounter the finished product. Do not copy a category or permitted use level from another product, even if both products share a fragrance name.

Know what a conformity certificate proves

For a fragrance mixture intended for a finished consumer product, ask its supplier for a Certificate of Conformity to the IFRA Standards. Check the mixture identity, issuing supplier, applicable standards or amendment, intended use, and stated use level. Keep the document version with the approved formula and order record.

IFRA does not issue these certificates or approve finished products. The certificate is a supplier declaration for the named fragrance mixture and use. It does not replace a finished-product safety assessment or the laws of the destination market. An essential oil sold as a raw material generally does not receive the same type of mixture certificate; ask its supplier what conformity information is available for the actual material and intended use.

Keep the document set tied to the product

An IFRA conformity certificate and a safety data sheet (SDS) answer different questions. A supplier may also need to provide an allergen declaration, transport appraisal, or other information relevant to a particular formula, market, or shipping route. Ask which records exist for the exact product or batch under review. If the formula, supplier, or intended use changes, request a fresh check before using an earlier certificate.

A practical purchasing request

Send the supplier the fragrance or sample reference, finished-product format, target market, planned fragrance use level, and expected order quantity. Ask who issues the IFRA conformity certificate for the mixture, which other documents can be supplied for this specific project, and whether any information is still missing. Keep unresolved claims out of packaging or sales material until your compliance team has checked them.

Aromiso can coordinate these questions with the relevant partner factory and fragrance supplier. Document availability is confirmed for each actual formula and order. Send your project brief to request the available records and discuss your product requirements.
