Essential Oil Purity Standards: What to Specify in Your Purchase Order

“Purity” is the most abused word in the essential oil trade. Every supplier claims it; few can document it to a defensible standard. The fix is contractual: write the test methods, acceptance ranges, and rejection triggers into the purchase order so purity becomes measurable rather than aspirational.

Purity Has Three Distinct Meanings

Before specifying, separate the concepts:

  1. Botanical authenticity. Is this actually Lavandula angustifolia, or is it lavandin cut with synthetic linalool?
  2. Chemical integrity. Are the natural constituent ratios within the expected range, with no added isolates or carrier dilution?
  3. Contaminant limits. Are pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and oxidation byproducts below threshold?

A single GC/MS report addresses the first two partially and the third not at all. A complete spec references all three.

The GC/MS Clause

Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry is the workhorse test. Specify it precisely:

  • Method: GC/MS per ISO 11024-1 and ISO 11020-2 (or equivalent)
  • Report: full chromatogram with peak identification, not just a constituent table
  • Lot linkage: report must reference the exact lot number on the COA
  • Freshness: report dated within 90 days of shipment, or re-tested at delivery
  • Library match: NIST or Wiley library, with match factors above 80% for major peaks

For each oil, also specify the constituent ranges from the relevant ISO standard. Examples:

  • Lavender (ISO 3515): linalool 20-45%, linalyl acetate 25-47%, camphor below 1.2%
  • Peppermint (ISO 856): menthol 30-55%, menthone 14-32%, limonene 1-5%
  • Tea tree (ISO 4730): terpinen-4-ol minimum 30%, 1,8-cineole maximum 15%
  • Lemon (ISO 855): limonene 56-78%, beta-pinene 7-17%, citral 0.2-0.5%

Camphor above 1.2% in lavender is the classic adulteration tell: it indicates lavandin substitution. Citral below 0.2% in lemon suggests a terpene-stripped or synthetic oil.

Adulteration Markers

Beyond ranges, name the markers you will test for:

  • Synthetic linalool in lavender (detected by chiral GC showing racemic ratios)
  • Added d-limonene in citrus oils (chiral analysis)
  • Diethyl phthalate or dipropylene glycol as diluents (full-scan GC/MS)
  • Fatty acid methyl esters indicating carrier oil dilution
  • p-Cymene and ascaridole above natural levels in oxidized tea tree

Chiral GC costs more (USD 150-300 per sample versus USD 80-150 for standard GC/MS) but is the only reliable way to detect synthetic-natural blending for high-value oils like rose, neroli, and sandalwood.

Contaminant Limits

Reference these thresholds in the spec:

  • Pesticides: comply with EU Regulation 396/2005 MRLs, or USP <561>
  • Heavy metals: lead below 10 ppm, arsenic below 3 ppm, cadmium below 3 ppm, mercury below 1 ppm (per USP <233> or EU 1223/2009)
  • Residual solvents (for absolutes and CO2 extracts): hexane below 5 ppm, ethanol per ICH Q3C
  • Peroxide value: below 10 meq O2/kg for citrus and conifer oils
  • Microbial limits: total plate count below 1,000 CFU/g, no specified pathogens (ISO 21149)

Ask for a Certificate of Analysis that lists actual results against these limits, not a generic “complies” statement.

Physical Constants

Cheap and fast, physical constants catch gross problems:

  • Specific gravity at 20 C (ISO 279)
  • Refractive index at 20 C (ISO 280)
  • Optical rotation at 20 C (ISO 592)
  • Acid value and ester value where relevant (ISO 1242)

Each ISO monograph publishes the expected range. A refractive index outside range is a 30-second rejection trigger.

Acceptance and Rejection Language

The PO should state:

  • Sampling per ISO 2859-1, general inspection level II, AQL 1.0 for major defects
  • Buyer right to third-party testing at an accredited lab (SGS, Eurofins, Intertek) within 30 days of delivery
  • Rejection if any single constituent falls outside the cited ISO range, or if any adulteration marker is detected at any level
  • Replacement or refund within 30 days of documented rejection, with return shipping at supplier cost
  • Retained samples: supplier holds 100 ml per lot for 24 months

Retained samples matter. They let you re-test six months later when a customer complaint surfaces and prove whether the issue was the oil or your downstream handling.

Documentation Bundle

Attach this list to the PO and require all items at shipment:

  1. Lot-specific GC/MS report
  2. Certificate of Analysis with physical constants and contaminant results
  3. Safety Data Sheet, GHS revision 8 or later
  4. IFRA certificate stating the category limit and current amendment
  5. Allergen declaration (EU 26 allergens, plus citral, farnesol, etc.)
  6. Country of origin and harvest year
  7. Statement of vegan, animal-derived, and GMO status
  8. Kosher or halal certificates, if claimed

A Practical Testing Budget

For a 500 kg annual program across 10 SKUs, budget roughly:

  • Incoming GC/MS on every lot: 10 lots x USD 120 = USD 1,200
  • Annual chiral GC on top 3 high-risk oils: USD 600
  • Annual contaminant panel (pesticides, metals, micro): USD 1,500
  • Third-party audit or lab retainer: USD 1,000-2,000

Total around USD 4,000-5,000 per year, or about 1% of a USD 400,000 oil spend. That is the cheapest insurance line in the budget.

Purity is not a marketing claim you inherit from a supplier. It is a set of testable specifications you enforce. Write them into the purchase order, and the conversation with your factory becomes operational instead of philosophical.
